Petworth & the South Downs

    Wedding films in Petworth.

Photography and film come from one in-house team. Hayden films your Petworth day while Aaron shoots stills alongside, so the vows in a great Sussex barn, the speeches and the whole sound of a South Downs day come home with you, not just the pictures.

Why a film, not just photographs

What a film gives you that photos do not.

A photograph in the parkland is a lovely thing to have on the wall. It cannot give you back the sound. It will not have the sound of the vows, the laughter in the barn during the best man’s speech, or the quiet of the deer park before the rings. A film keeps all of that. That is the whole reason to book one, so you keep the sound of the day as well as the pictures.

We are Robinson Martin Green, based at Mudberry Lane near Chichester, and Petworth is only about 12 miles up the road, some of the closest ground we cover. The films are led by Hayden Martin-Green, who shoots and cuts them, with Aaron Robinson on stills working the same day beside him. We should be straight with you from the start. Even this close to home we have not filmed a wedding in the town itself yet, so we will not invent a Petworth couple to fill this page. What we do have are full wedding films from days a short drive away, made by the two people who would come and film yours.

Petworth films as classic South Downs country with a great house at the middle of it. The town is an antiques capital of narrow cobbled streets wrapped around Petworth House, whose Capability Brown deer park spreads out behind it, and the film catches that mix of grand parkland and old Sussex stone. This is barn-and-Downs country, so a wedding here gives you timber and beams for the vows and open downland for the wide shots. Sound needs planning in a big barn and out in the open, so we mic close either way. Handled right, the parkland and the Downs sit in the film as atmosphere under the words.

    The vows, with real sound
    Adding a film

You cannot film it again later.

Most couples plan the photographs first and leave the film as the thing they might add later. Then the day passes in a blur, the speeches happen once, the first dance happens once, and there is no way to go back and record any of it again. Stills freeze how it looked. Only a film gives you the movement and the sound, including the speeches as they were given and the room going quiet for the rings. It is the one part of the day you cannot make again afterwards, which is why we suggest booking the film early.

    The first kiss
Filming the Downs and the park

From getting ready to the first dance.

A Petworth wedding film has several looks in it, and a South Downs day gives you all of them. In the morning we film the getting ready, the details and the walk to the ceremony. The middle of the day is the vows inside a great Sussex barn, the part where the timber works with us on the sound. Then the evening comes, and the Downs earn the film. As the light drops low and gold across the parkland and the hills behind, a couple walking out into the grounds gives you the closing shots of the film.

The reception films differently again. First dances, speeches and the noise of a full barn need the sound as much as the picture, so we keep recording the room while we film it, and the finished piece carries the laugh through the best man’s speech and the first bars of your first dance as they actually sounded, not a track dropped over the top.

    On the day

How your Petworth day gets filmed.

Because Hayden films while Aaron photographs, there is one team, one plan and one point of contact rather than two suppliers meeting for the first time at your ceremony. That matters more on film than it does on stills. A videographer who has never met your photographer ends up in half their shots and competing for the aisle during the vows, and you are the one caught in the middle asking two strangers to sort it out. We have already agreed who stands where before you walk in, so the camera can hold on you without a second shooter drifting into frame.

Hayden films the ceremony on 2 cameras, one held on the couple and one wider on the room, so a missed reaction on one angle is caught on the other and the vows are never lost to a blocked shot. For a barn or an estate we walk it first, so the first time we film there is not on your actual day, and we work out in advance where the cameras sit without blocking your guests, where the sound is cleanest under a timber roof, where the light falls at your ceremony hour, and where a drone can fly over the Downs. Being close to home, we often already know the venue. Nothing gets staged twice for the two cameras. You are filmed and photographed at the same time, then handed back to your guests.

    Venues around Petworth

How the Petworth venues look and sound on film.

Real venues in and around the town, each seen the way a filmmaker reads a room: where the movement is, where the light lands across the Downs, and where a voice carries under a barn roof. We walk any of them ahead of your day so the first time we film there is not on the day itself.

Petworth and the South Downs, on film

    • Grittenham Barn, a Grade II listed Sussex barn near the town, licensed for ceremonies inside and out, set in gardens with a lake, an orchard and woodland and views to the South Downs. The old timber holds the vows close on the recording, and the grounds give the film water, woodland and downland for the wider shots.
    • Southdowns Manor, an exclusive-use venue near Petworth in the South Downs National Park. Taken for the day, it films with room to breathe, the house anchoring the frame while the couple move across the grounds and the hills carry the background.
    • The Angel Inn in Petworth, a characterful town venue with a courtyard pergola for a smaller, intimate ceremony that records warm and close in the heart of the old town.
    • Petworth House and its Capability Brown deer park, the great National Trust landmark at the centre of the town, and the cobbled antique streets around it. This is the backdrop the film builds on, the parkland and the Downs giving it the open scale a room alone cannot.
    After the day

    Editing and delivery.

The edit is where a wedding film is actually made, and it is worth knowing what happens after the day. We work through the footage and the recorded sound, choose the moments, and cut your Petworth film, usually within 8 to 10 weeks. It lands in your private Wedding Hub, the same place your photographs are delivered, so the film and the gallery sit together in one spot. With Silver or Gold a short teaser is there first, so you can share a little of the day before the film is ready. Because both your film and your photographs come from us, there is one delivery, one login, and one team to talk to if you want a change.

    Before you ask

Questions from Petworth couples booking a film.

Our ceremony is in a Sussex barn or out in the grounds. Will the vows and speeches sound right on the film?

Both are fine on film for opposite reasons, and both come down to micing properly rather than trusting the camera. A big listed barn like Grittenham holds a voice but can ring, so we mic close and let the timber sit under the vows. An outdoor ceremony in the grounds is open, so a breeze off the Downs can catch a word, and we shield the mics and put a radio mic on the groom and one on the officiant to keep the words clean. Either way the music goes under the recorded sound, never in place of it.

What film do we get for a Petworth day, and how long does it run?

You get one edited wedding film, included with every collection, and there is no second full-length version. The running time follows the day, and Adam and Panha’s film is 5 minutes 57. If you choose Silver or Gold, a short teaser comes to you first to share early, and the speeches are recorded in full in the film so nothing across a country day is trimmed. The film itself lands in your private Wedding Hub, usually within 8 to 10 weeks of the day.

Can we have drone footage over the Downs, or a short reel for social?

The parkland and the South Downs around Petworth are made for an aerial, and the open grounds of a venue like Grittenham or Southdowns Manor are ideal where the airspace allows. National Park land can carry restrictions, so we check what is permitted for your exact venue and date rather than promising a shot we cannot fly, and get the scale from the ground where we cannot. We can also cut a short vertical teaser, around 60 seconds, for Instagram and TikTok, so you have something to share while the full film is still in the edit.

You are just down the road. Does that change anything?

Petworth is only about 12 miles from our base near Chichester, so it is some of the closest ground we cover, and there is no travel charge for it. It also means we already know the light and the roads and the Downs around the town well. Film can be booked on its own if you already have a photographer, though most couples book both with us so one team runs the day on one plan.
