Petworth & the South Downs

Wedding photography and film in Petworth.

Aaron takes the photographs and Hayden shoots the film, as one team. We cover Petworth and the barns and estates of the South Downs around it, never two strangers competing for the same shot.

Petworth is classic South Downs country with a great house at the middle of it, an antiques town of narrow cobbled streets wrapped around Petworth House and its Capability Brown deer park. For a photographer it is a rich mix, grand parkland one minute and old Sussex stone the next, all under the light of the Downs. We are Robinson Martin Green, a two-person studio based at Mudberry Lane near Chichester, and Petworth is only about twelve miles up the road, some of the closest ground we cover, shooting both the photographs and the film as one team.

The team is Aaron Robinson on stills and Hayden Martin-Green on film. We work as one unit on the day rather than two suppliers who met for the first time that morning. In a big barn or out in the grounds, a photographer and a filmmaker who have not worked together end up in each other’s frames and fighting for the same angle during the vows. We have already agreed who stands where, so neither of us blocks the other and you are not the one trying to keep two strangers apart.

We should be straight about this, even this close to home. We have not yet documented a wedding in Petworth itself. We would rather tell you that plainly than dress up a page with a Petworth couple who does not exist. What we can show you is real work a short drive away, and the same two people who know these Downs well will be the ones who turn up for you.

How we would cover a Petworth day

One team for photo and film.

Most couples start out planning to hire a photographer and a separate videographer. The hidden cost of that is coordination, and it lands on you. Two suppliers means two timelines to chase, two sets of questions about when the speeches start, and two people who each want the couple to themselves for portraits. Booking the photographs and the film as one studio removes all of that. There is one timeline, one shot list, one point of contact, and one shared plan for how Aaron and Hayden move through your day.

For a Petworth day that usually means a short run up from Chichester in the morning, a barn or an estate handled by a proper walk-round beforehand, and two of us reading the same light so nothing important rests on one person. The timber indoors and the open Downs outside ask different things of the light, so we plan where the good light sits at your ceremony hour and hold a little back for portraits in the parkland when the sun drops. We run stills and film side by side without staging anything twice, agree the moments that matter to you specifically, and stay with you from the getting-ready through to the evening so the whole day comes back as one set.

    Petworth and the South Downs

    • Grittenham Barn, a Grade II listed Sussex barn near the town, licensed for ceremonies inside and out, set in gardens with a lake, an orchard and woodland and views to the South Downs. Old timber gives a photograph warmth indoors and the grounds give water, woodland and downland outside.
    • Southdowns Manor, an exclusive-use venue near Petworth in the South Downs National Park, taken for the day with the house and the hills as your backdrop.
    • The Angel Inn in Petworth, a characterful town venue with a courtyard pergola shaded by magnolia and wisteria, an intimate setting in the heart of the old town.
    • Petworth House and its Capability Brown deer park, the great National Trust landmark at the centre of the town, and the cobbled antiques streets around it, for portraits with real grandeur and the Downs behind.
    The ground around Petworth

A few of the Petworth settings we are set up for.

Real venues in and around the town, each with something specific to plan around. We visit any of them ahead of your day so the first time we shoot there is not on the day itself.

Real work, not a stock gallery

The nearest day we can actually show you.

We would rather point you at a real wedding than pad this page with a testimonial from a Petworth couple we have never met. The closest documented day is Becky and Lucas, which ran from Horsham through to The Highdown, the same county and the same two people you would be booking. It is not Petworth, and we are not going to dress it up as if it were, but it is an honest look at how we work across a full day rather than a set of staged sample shots.

    Before you book

    Common questions from Petworth couples.

Have you photographed at Grittenham Barn or Southdowns Manor before?

Not yet, and we will not pretend otherwise, even though Petworth is close to home. Our documented weddings are a short drive from the town rather than in Petworth itself. For any venue we have not worked at, we go and visit ahead of the day so we already know the ceremony space, where the light falls and the best spots for portraits before we turn up with you. A listed Sussex barn or a South Downs estate is a known quantity to plan around even on a first booking.

How do you handle the light in a big barn and out on the Downs?

They are opposite problems and we plan for both. Inside a listed barn the light is low and warm through the timber, so we work with the window light and let the wood tones carry the frame rather than flattening them with flash. Out on the Downs the light is open and can be harsh at midday, so we place portraits with it and hold a little back for the last hour when it runs gold across the parkland. Two of us means one can be reading the light while the other stays on you.

You are based near Chichester. Does travel to Petworth cost extra?

Petworth is only about twelve miles from Mudberry Lane, some of the closest ground we cover, so there is certainly no travel charge for it, and we already know the town and the Downs around it well. We would tell you upfront if a venue ever fell outside our area, rather than adding anything quietly later.
