Godalming & the Wey valley

    Wedding films in Godalming.

We are one in-house team for photos and film. Hayden films your Godalming day while Aaron shoots stills alongside, so the vows by the water, the speeches and the whole sound of the day come home with you, not just the pictures.

Why a film, not just photographs

What you get from a film.

A photograph by the lake or under the trees is a lovely thing to have on the wall. It cannot give you back the sound. It will not have the sound of the vows, the laughter in the marquee during the best man’s speech, or the stillness of the water before the rings. A film records all of that. That is the whole reason to book one, because the sound of the day comes home with you as well as the pictures.

We are Robinson Martin Green, based at Mudberry Lane near Chichester, and Godalming sits about 32 miles north, well inside the area we cover. The films are led by Hayden Martin-Green, who shoots and cuts them, with Aaron Robinson on stills working the same day beside him. We should be straight with you from the start. We cover Godalming but we have not filmed a wedding in the town itself yet, so we will not invent a Godalming couple to fill this page. What we do have are full wedding films from days a short drive from home, made by the two people who would come and film yours.

Godalming films as the softer, greener country south of Guildford, where the Surrey greensand and the Wey valley give you lakes, water gardens and deep woodland around an intimate old market town. It is quiet on film, and that quiet is the point. A ceremony reflected in still water, or held in a clearing under old trees, gives you a stillness the busier towns cannot, and the autumn colour through the valley turns a film gold and russet in a way high summer never does. Sound is the thing to plan for by water and under canvas, because a breeze crosses a lake and a marquee soaks sound up, so we mic close either way. Handled right, the water and the woodland sit in the film as atmosphere under the words.

    The vows, recorded live
    Booking the film

The speeches and vows only happen once.

Most couples plan the photographs first and leave the film as the thing they might add later. Then the day passes in a blur, the speeches happen once, the first dance happens once, and there is no way to go back and record any of it again. Stills freeze how it looked. Only a film gives you the movement and the sound, so you hear the speeches, the vows and the room again. It is the one part of the day you cannot make again afterwards, so it is worth deciding on early.

The first kiss after the vows
Filming the lakes and the woods

How the day looks on film.

A Godalming wedding film has several looks in it, and a lakes-and-woodland day gives you all of them. In the morning we film the getting ready, the details and the walk down to the water. The middle of the day is the vows, whether that is by a lake or under the trees or in a marquee, the part where we work hardest on the sound. The evening is when the valley looks best on film. As the light drops through the woods and lies flat and gold across the still water, a couple walking the lake edge gives you some of the best evening footage of the day.

The reception films differently again. First dances, speeches and the noise of a full marquee need the sound as much as the picture, so we keep recording the room while we film it, and the finished piece carries the laugh through the best man’s speech and the first bars of your first dance as they actually sounded, not a track dropped over the top.

    On the day

How your Godalming day gets filmed.

Because Hayden films while Aaron photographs, there is one team, one plan and one point of contact rather than two suppliers meeting for the first time at your ceremony. That matters more on film than it does on stills. A videographer who has never met your photographer ends up in half their shots and competing for the aisle during the vows, and you are the one caught in the middle asking two strangers to sort it out. We have already agreed who stands where before you walk in, so the camera can hold on you without a second shooter drifting into frame.

Hayden films the ceremony on 2 cameras, one held on the couple and one wider on the room, so a missed reaction on one angle is caught on the other and the vows are never lost to a blocked shot. For a lakeside or woodland venue like Busbridge Lakes, or an estate like Charterhouse, we walk it first and work out in advance where the cameras sit without blocking your guests, where the sound is cleanest by water and under trees, where the light falls through the canopy at your ceremony hour, and where a drone can fly over the valley. Nothing gets staged twice for the two cameras. You are filmed and photographed at the same time, then handed back to your guests.

    Venues around Godalming

How the Godalming venues look and sound on film.

Real venues in and around the town, each seen the way a filmmaker reads a room: where the movement is, where the light lands on the water, and where a voice carries in the open. We walk any of them ahead of your day so the first time we film there is not on the day itself.

Godalming and the Wey valley, on film

    • Busbridge Lakes, a family-run venue hidden in a private valley with three lakes and heritage gardens. The still water gives the film reflections and calm nothing else can, and a marquee wedding here films with the woods and the lakes all around it for the wide shots and the golden-hour walk.
    • Charterhouse, set in around 250 acres with grand 19th-century architecture and three spaces licensed for civil ceremonies. It films with real scale, the old buildings anchoring the frame and the grounds opening out for the aerial and the evening light.
    • Clock Barn Hall, a rustic barn and farm wedding venue near the town. Big timber and open countryside give the film warmth and texture, the barn holding the ceremony sound close before the fields take over outside.
    • The wider Wey valley and the woodland of Winkworth Arboretum, famous for its autumn colour. This is the country the drone and the last-light walk are built for, the water and the trees giving the film a depth and a season a single room cannot.
    After the day

    How the film is delivered.

The edit is where a wedding film is actually made, and it is worth knowing what happens after the day. We work through the footage and the recorded sound, choose the moments, and edit your wedding film, usually within 8 to 10 weeks. It lands in your private Wedding Hub, the same place your photographs are delivered, so the film and the gallery sit together in one spot. Silver and Gold couples get a short teaser there first, a taste of the day to share while the film is finished. Because both your film and your photographs come from us, there is one delivery, one login, and one team to talk to if you want a change.

    Common questions

Questions from Godalming couples booking a film.

Our ceremony is by a lake or in a marquee. Will the vows and speeches sound right on the film?

Open water and a marquee are the classic outdoor-sound challenges, and both come down to micing properly rather than trusting the camera. By a lake a breeze crosses the water, so we shield the mics and put a radio mic on the groom and one on the officiant to keep the words clean. A marquee has soft walls that soak up sound, so we mic close and add a recorder for the speeches so the top table is not lost under the noise of the room. Either way the music sits under the recorded audio, never in place of it.

How long is the wedding film for a Godalming day, and what comes first?

There is one wedding film, and an edited one comes with every collection, so you are not choosing between versions. The running time depends on the day, and Adam and Panha’s film is 5 minutes 57. Silver and Gold include a short teaser to share early and the speeches recorded in full in the film. The teaser arrives first, then the film reaches your private Wedding Hub, usually within 8 to 10 weeks of the day.

Can we have drone footage over the lakes and woodland, or a short reel for social?

The lakes and the wooded valleys around Godalming film beautifully from the air, and a private valley like Busbridge is often more open for flying than a busy town. Some woodland is protected, so over places like the arboretum we check what is permitted for your exact venue and date rather than promising a shot we cannot fly, and get the scale from the ground where we cannot. We can also cut a short vertical teaser, around 60 seconds, for Instagram and TikTok, so you have something to share while the full film is still in the edit.

You are a fair way south. Can you cover a Godalming day properly?

Godalming is about 32 miles from our base near Chichester, and well inside the area we cover. We film weddings across Surrey and treat a Godalming day exactly as we would a local one, arriving early, walking the venue in advance, and building the whole plan around your timings. Film can be booked on its own if you already have a photographer, though most couples book both with us so one team runs the day on one plan.
