Guildford & the Surrey hills

Wedding photography and film in Guildford.

Your photographs and your film come from one in-house team. We cover Guildford and the great estates and hills around it, never two strangers competing for the same shot.

Guildford is Surrey hill country with a grand old town at the middle of it. The cathedral stands over the whole place on Stag Hill, the steep cobbled High Street runs down to the River Wey, and a few minutes out the North Downs and the great estates take over, Loseley chief among them. For a photographer it gives you two very different looks in one day, the richness of a panelled hall and the open light of the hills. We are Robinson Martin Green, a two-person studio based at Mudberry Lane near Chichester, and we cover Guildford weddings across the Surrey hills as one team that shoots both the photographs and the film.

The team is Aaron Robinson on stills and Hayden Martin-Green on film. We work as one unit on the day rather than two suppliers who met for the first time that morning. In a grand hall with set places you are allowed to stand, a photographer and a filmmaker who have not worked together end up in each other’s frames and fighting for the same angle during the vows. We have already agreed who stands where, so neither of us blocks the other and you are not the one trying to keep two strangers apart within the venue’s rules.

We should be straight about this. Guildford is about thirty-five miles from our base, up the A3 and over the Downs and well inside the area we cover, but we have not yet documented a wedding in the town itself. We would rather tell you that plainly than dress up a page with a Guildford couple who does not exist. What we can show you is real work an easy drive from home, and the same two people will be the ones who turn up for you.

How we would cover a Guildford day

One team for photo and film.

Most couples start out planning to hire a photographer and a separate videographer. The hidden cost of that is coordination, and it lands on you. Two suppliers means two timelines to chase, two sets of questions about when the speeches start, and two people who each want the couple to themselves for portraits. Booking the photographs and the film as one studio removes all of that. There is one timeline, one shot list, one point of contact, and one shared plan for how Aaron and Hayden move through your day.

For a Guildford day that usually means a run up from Chichester in the morning, an estate or a cathedral handled by a proper walk-round and a word with the venue beforehand, and two of us reading the same light so nothing important rests on one person. A panelled hall and the open hills ask completely different things of the light, so we plan where the good light sits at your ceremony hour and hold a little back for portraits in the walled garden when the sun drops. We run stills and film side by side without staging anything twice, agree the moments that matter to you specifically, and stay with you from the getting-ready through to the evening so the whole day comes back as one set.

    Guildford and the Surrey hills

    • Loseley Park, the Elizabethan mansion three miles south of the town in 1,400 acres. The panelled Great Hall photographs with genuine period richness, the 17th-century Tithe Barn gives warm timber for the reception, and the three-acre Gertrude Jekyll walled garden is made for portraits and confetti.
    • Guildford Cathedral on Stag Hill, consecrated in 1961, standing over the whole town in warm brick with great windows that throw light down the nave for a photograph with real scale.
    • The old town itself, the steep cobbled High Street beneath the overhanging Guildhall clock and the River Wey below, full of character for the walk between ceremony and reception.
    • The North Downs and the long ridge of the Hog’s Back around the town, open Surrey hill country for portraits with real depth behind them in the last hour of light.
    The ground around Guildford

A few of the Guildford settings we are set up for.

Real venues in and around the town, each with something specific to plan around. We visit any of them ahead of your day so the first time we shoot there is not on the day itself.

Real work, not a stock gallery

The nearest day we can actually show you.

We would rather point you at a real wedding than pad this page with a testimonial from a Guildford couple we have never met. The closest documented day is Becky and Lucas, which ran from Horsham through to The Highdown, the same two people you would be booking. It is not Guildford, and we are not going to dress it up as if it were, but it is an honest look at how we work across a full day rather than a set of staged sample shots.

    Good to know

    Common questions from Guildford couples.

Have you photographed at Loseley Park or Guildford Cathedral before?

Not yet, and we will not pretend otherwise. Our documented weddings are a short drive from home rather than in Guildford itself. For any venue we have not worked at, we go and visit ahead of the day so we already know the ceremony room, where the light falls and the best spots for portraits before we turn up with you. A panelled hall, a tithe barn or a walled garden is a known quantity to plan around even on a first booking.

How do you handle the light in a grand panelled hall and out on the hills?

They are opposite problems and we plan for both. Inside a panelled Great Hall the light is low and rich, so we work with the window light and let the wood tones warm the frame rather than flattening them with flash. Out on the North Downs the light is open and can be harsh at midday, so we place portraits with it and hold a little back for the last hour when it runs gold across the parkland and the walled garden. Two of us means one can be reading the light while the other stays on you.

You are based near Chichester. Does travel to Guildford cost extra?

Guildford is about thirty-five miles from Mudberry Lane, up the A3 and over the Downs and well inside the area we cover, so there is no separate travel charge for a Guildford wedding. We would tell you upfront if a venue ever fell outside that, rather than adding it quietly later.
