Midhurst & the South Downs

Wedding photography and film in Midhurst.

Aaron photographs and Hayden films, and we plan the day together. We cover Midhurst and the estate venues around it, never two strangers competing for the same shot.

Cross the causeway out of Midhurst and the Cowdray Ruins sit right there at the edge of the town, the broken Tudor walls that most couples end up walking their guests past at some point in the day. A photographer who knows the light there waits for the late-afternoon sun to come across the stone rather than shooting it flat at midday. We are Robinson Martin Green, a two-person studio based at Mudberry Lane in Chichester, and we cover Midhurst weddings across the South Downs as one team that shoots both the photographs and the film.

The team is Aaron Robinson on stills and Hayden Martin-Green on film. We work as one unit on the day rather than two suppliers who met for the first time that morning. That matters more than it sounds. In a walled garden with high brick on every side and one gate in and out, a photographer and a filmmaker who have not worked together end up in each other’s frames and fighting for the same angle during the vows. We have already agreed who stands where, so neither of us blocks the other and you are not the one trying to keep two strangers apart.

We should be straight about this. Midhurst is about twelve miles from our base, well inside the area we cover, but we have not yet documented a wedding in the town itself. We would rather tell you that plainly than dress up a page with a Midhurst couple who does not exist. What we can show you is real work an easy drive away, and the same two people will be the ones who turn up for you.

How we would cover a Midhurst day

One team for photo and film.

Most couples start out planning to hire a photographer and a separate videographer. The hidden cost of that is coordination, and it lands on you. Two suppliers means two timelines to chase, two sets of questions about when the speeches start, and two people who each want the couple to themselves for portraits. Booking the photographs and the film as one studio removes all of that. There is one timeline, one shot list, one point of contact, and one shared plan for how Aaron and Hayden move through your day.

For a Midhurst day that usually means a drive up from Chichester in the morning, unfamiliar-venue nerves handled by a proper walk-round beforehand, and two of us reading the same room so nothing important rests on one person. We run stills and film side by side without staging anything twice. We talk through the order of the day with you in advance and agree the moments that matter to you specifically rather than working off a template. If your ceremony is at a licensed venue like the Walled Garden and the rest of the day moves elsewhere on the estate, we stay with you across both so the morning and the evening come back as one set.

    Midhurst and the Cowdray estate

    • The Spread Eagle Hotel and Spa on South Street, a coaching inn that has stood since 1430, with the stone walls and heraldic banners of the Jacobean Hall for a larger day and the beamed King Edward VII Room, with its open fireplace, for a smaller one.
    • The Walled Garden at Cowdray at Easebourne, a garden dating to 1550 set against the Cowdray Ruins and the estate polo lawns, licensed for ceremonies from around ten guests up to a hundred.
    • Cowdray House, the estate’s grand country house in the South Downs National Park, for couples planning a larger celebration with the ruins and parkland as the backdrop.
    • Cowdray Ruins themselves, a two-minute walk from the market square, where the Tudor stone gives you portraits you will not get anywhere else in the county.
    The ground around Midhurst

A few of the Midhurst settings we are set up for.

Real venues in and around the town, each with something specific to plan around. We visit any of them ahead of your day so the first time we shoot there is not on the day itself.

    Good to know

    Common questions from Midhurst couples.

Have you shot at Cowdray or the Spread Eagle before?

Not yet, and we will not pretend otherwise. We have real weddings a short drive away rather than in Midhurst itself. For any venue we have not worked at, we visit ahead of the day so we already know the ceremony space, the light and the spots for portraits before we arrive with you. The Cowdray Ruins and the walled garden are a known quantity to plan around even on a first booking.

The light around the South Downs changes fast. How do you handle it?

That is the part we plan for. Estate grounds and a walled garden move from open sun to deep shade within a few steps, so we scout where the good light will be at your ceremony time and hold a little back for portraits when the sun drops behind the Downs. Two of us means one can be reading the light while the other stays on the couple.

You are based in Chichester. Does travel to Midhurst cost extra?

Midhurst is roughly twelve miles from Mudberry Lane, so it sits inside our normal covered area and there is no separate travel charge for it. We would tell you upfront if a venue ever fell outside that, rather than adding it quietly later.

How far in advance should we book a Midhurst summer date?

Popular dates from late spring through to early autumn tend to go twelve to eighteen months out, and the estate venues around Cowdray fill first. Shorter notice does come up, so it is worth asking even if your date is only a few months away.
