Lewes & the East Sussex Downs

Wedding photography and film in Lewes.

Aaron takes the photographs and Hayden shoots the film, as one team. We travel to Lewes and the venues around it, never two strangers competing for the same shot.

Climb up to Lewes Castle and the town lays itself out below you, the tile-hung houses running down to the Ouse and the South Downs rising green behind the whole thing. The medieval keep garden up there is licensed for ceremonies now, and it is the sort of spot where a photographer who knows the light waits for the sun to drop across the flint rather than shooting it flat in the middle of the day. We are Robinson Martin Green, a two-person studio based at Mudberry Lane in Chichester, and we cover Lewes weddings across the Downs as one team that shoots both the photographs and the film.

The team is Aaron Robinson on stills and Hayden Martin-Green on film. We work as one unit on the day rather than two suppliers who met for the first time that morning. That matters more than it sounds. In the tight garden of a townhouse venue, or up on the castle mound with a queue of guests and one narrow path, a photographer and a filmmaker who have not worked together end up in each other’s frames and fighting for the same angle during the vows. We have already agreed who stands where, so neither of us blocks the other and you are not the one trying to keep two strangers apart.

We should be straight about this. Lewes is a fair way from us, roughly forty miles east along the coast into East Sussex, close to a two-hour round trip, and we have not yet documented a wedding in the town itself. It sits at the far side of the area we travel to rather than on our doorstep, and we would rather tell you that plainly than pretend to be your local Lewes photographer. What we can show you is real work an easy drive from our base, and the same two people will be the ones who make the trip for you.

How we would cover a Lewes day

One team for photo and film.

Most couples start out planning to hire a photographer and a separate videographer. The hidden cost of that is coordination, and it lands on you. Two suppliers means two timelines to chase, two sets of questions about when the speeches start, and two people who each want the couple to themselves for portraits. Booking the photographs and the film as one studio removes all of that. There is one timeline, one shot list, one point of contact, and one shared plan for how Aaron and Hayden move through your day.

For a Lewes day that means an early start from Chichester and a proper walk-round of the venue beforehand so the unfamiliar corners are handled before you arrive. We run stills and film side by side without staging anything twice. We talk through the order of the day with you in advance and agree the moments that matter to you specifically rather than working off a template. If your ceremony is up at the castle or in a townhouse garden and the party moves elsewhere for the evening, we stay with you across both so the day comes back as one set rather than two.

Lewes and the East Sussex Downs

    • Pelham House on St Andrews Lane, first built as a townhouse in the sixteenth century by the lawyer and MP George Goring, now an exclusive-use venue with 29 bedrooms and a walled garden two minutes from the high street.
    • Lewes Castle, the Norman fortress begun soon after 1066 by William de Warenne, where the keep garden is licensed for open-air ceremonies and gives you the South Downs on every side.
    • Southover Grange, the Grade II star listed stone house built in 1572, whose public gardens sit just below the town, a quiet green spot that couples married nearby often use for portraits.
    • Firle Place, roughly five miles east under the Downs, a stately home with grand rooms and wide gardens licensed for ceremonies, for couples planning something on a larger scale.

Real venues in and around the town, each with something specific to plan around. We visit any of them ahead of your day so the first time we shoot there is not on the day itself.

    FAQs

    Common questions from Lewes couples.

Have you shot in Lewes before?

Not yet, and we will not pretend otherwise. We have real weddings a good drive west of here rather than in Lewes itself. For any venue we have not worked at, we visit ahead of the day so we already know the ceremony space, the light and the spots for portraits before we turn up with you. Pelham House, the castle garden and Southover Grange are all places we would walk before your date.

You are based in Chichester. How does travel to Lewes work?

Lewes is about forty miles from Mudberry Lane, close to a two-hour round trip, so it is a genuine journey rather than a local job. We build that into the quote openly rather than adding it quietly later. You get the true figure before you book, and there are no surprises on the invoice.

The light shifts fast around the Downs. How do you handle it?

That is the part we plan for. A castle mound and a walled garden move from open sun to deep shade within a few steps, so we work out where the good light will be at your ceremony time and hold a little back for portraits when the sun drops behind the ridge. Two of us means one can be reading the light while the other stays on the couple.

Can you cover a ceremony at Lewes Castle and a reception somewhere else?

Yes, and that split is common in the town. The keep garden is licensed for the ceremony but there is not the room up there for a full reception, so plenty of couples move down into a townhouse venue or a hall afterwards. We stay with you across both parts of the day so the morning on the mound and the evening indoors come back as one continuous set rather than two separate halves.

How far in advance should we book a Lewes date?

Popular dates from late spring through to early autumn tend to go twelve to eighteen months out, and the exclusive-use venues fill first. Shorter notice does come up, so it is worth asking even if your date is only a few months away. If we are already booked we will tell you straight away rather than leaving you waiting.
